The flag, which was the national flag and military ensign of China from 1928 to 1949, was kept by the nationalist forces after they were defeated by the communists and found refuge on the island of Taiwan in 1949.
The twelve rays of the white sun represent the two twelve-hour periods of the people, and together they symbolize the spirit of continuous progress. The colors symbolize the three pillars of the nation's life: democracy (blue), the people's livelihoods (white), and nationalism (red).
Their dual meanings: equality and justice (blue), fraternity and openness (white), freedom and sacrifice (red).
