The flag of Latvia consists of two dark red (or carmine) horizontal bands separated by a narrow white stripe. The colors are rooted in ancient Latvian traditions. Legend has it that a Latvian warrior was wounded in battle, and the white sheet he lay upon turned red from his blood. When the warriors went into battle, they used this blood-stained sheet as their flag. The white stripe symbolizes the untouched part of the sheet. Simple yet deeply historical and culturally significant, the flag is an integral part of Latvia's national identity
