The current form of the German flag was first officially used in 1919 and became the national flag again in 1949 after World War II. The German flag consists of three horizontal stripes of equal width: black, red, and gold. The development of the current flag took many centuries and dates back to the first unification of Germany. There are two theories about the origin of the black-red-gold color combination. One theory suggests that the colors are reminiscent of the uniforms of the Lützow Free Corps, while the other theory refers to the imperial coat of arms of the Holy Roman Empire.
